Virginia Redistricting

Del. Dan Helmer has emerged as a central figure in Virginia Democratic politics — and one of the party’s most effective operatives in the fight against MAGA extremism.

As House Democrats’ Campaigns Chair, Helmer recruited the most diverse slate of Democratic challengers in Virginia history, running competitive races in every corner of the Commonwealth. The result was historic: Democrats flipped 13 Republican-held seats and built a 64-36 majority — the largest in nearly four decades. The Washington Post credited the victory to “a savvy campaign operation quarterbacked by Del. Dan Helmer.”

That majority has been the engine behind Virginia’s most progressive legislative session in a generation — passing an assault weapons ban, unmasking ICE agents, protecting the truth about January 6th in public schools, expanding IVF access, and holding VMI accountable. It also made possible the mid-decade redistricting effort that will put fair congressional maps in front of Virginia voters, an initiative Helmer helped architect before stepping aside from the map-drawing process.

Now, Helmer is running for the new 7th Congressional District, as reported by The New York Times. A West Point graduate, Rhodes Scholar, and Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, Helmer has never taken a dime of corporate PAC money. He enters the race with endorsements from former Gov. Ralph Northam, 43 Democratic state legislators, and Rep. Eugene Vindman.

“We need fighters with a proven track record of not just standing up but winning against Donald Trump and the Republican Congress to get our country back in the right direction,” Helmer said. “I’m a progressive fighter with an unmatched record of taking on Trump and winning.”
